Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 28: 1-2
Deuteronomy, chapter 28, verses 3- 14 goes on to list the many ways God will bless us, our children, the work of our hands etc.
Are you living in obedience? A lot of Christians are fond of saying they are standing on God’s word and believing in the promise of His blessings. That’s all fine and dandy, but if you fail to abide by the conditions required to receive the blessings, then you’re standing on nothing more than your own expectations. The Blessings are the by-product of obedience.

Wow! So much to be said about this post. You're absolutely right. We pray "gimmee" prayers, as if God is Santa Claus.
Salvation is God's permanent and eternal gift. That's His gift of grace, the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus says, though, that to really have a personal relationship — the blessed relationship — we must take up our cross daily and follow Him. We must understand that in this world we will have trouble. AND that when we give (time, talents and money/resources), that's when God gives back abundantly, pressed down and overflowing. It's a two-way street, this relationship of faith!
