I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
Do you know someone that can walk into a room and snatch the peace and joy right out of it with their negativity? Over the years, I’ve met several bitter, angry people. I’ve also experienced living in the same space with someone who decided to dwell on the negatives and become mean and selfish as a result.
I say ‘decided’ because I firmly believe we have a choice. Setbacks and disappointments visit everyone but giving into the temptation to become bitter is an option. Holding on to the love and joy that is your birthright is also an option. Why would anyone choose to step away from a life of love and joy?
Some of them don’t know they can change their lives. Some know it’s possible, but don’t believe they can do it. And some people have no desire to change. They find comfort in their perception of the world as a joyless place full of bitter, angry people.
If you’re not paying attention when you are in their company, it is very easy to get sucked into their negativity.
We have to control what we allow into our minds and who we allow into our minds. That is where spiritual battles are won or lost. Thoughts are powerful and we should always be aware of our thoughts. As soon as you notice the angry or depressing thoughts some people can stir up in you; Stop. Change your thoughts and guard your joy.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy.” Philippians 4:8
You are a child of God – the Father of light and as children of light, no matter what is happening around us we do not have to allow it to enter our minds. Often, it’s the people closest to us who want to steal your joy and dim your light. But they did not give you joy and they can’t take it away – unless you allow it.
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. ~ Galatians 5:22-23
